Jean Hoerni is known for inventing the planar process. He was a silicon transistor pioneer and a member of the Traitorous Eight. Hoerni was born on September 26, 1924 in Geneva, Switzerland, and died on January 12, 1997. He recieved several Ph.D.’s and in 1952 moved to the united states to work at the California Institute of Technology, where he had met William Shockley. William invited Hoerni to the Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory, where Hoerni went on to invent the planar process.
